Spiritual direction is much less “directing” and way more listening, reflecting, and sometimes guiding. A better term is spiritual companionship or accompaniment or soul friendship, but I didn’t name it.

It is a practice that has been around for a long minute when a band of misfits called the Desert Mothers and Father decided to ship out to, yes, the desert when the Christian faith became the official religion of the Roman Empire and aligned with imperial power. I’m a history nerd and geek out on the details, but I won’t bore you with them. All to say, it has its roots in the desire to cultivate genuine, embodied, and liberative spirituality outside the walls of institutionalized religion and true to its roots.

Today, you can find the practice of spiritual direction in all religious traditions. It is a healing space where ALL of you gets to be present and held while we explore together your own unique connection and misfit-ness. The content of the sessions is your life. Since all aspects of our lives are spiritual.

The Divine is present in our doubt, anger, grief and pain as well as in our hopes & desires, our joy, and our healing. The Divine is the real Director of our lives, while an experienced companion (spiritual director) can often help you hear or notice at a deeper level in ways that are authentic to you, strengthening your intuition and discernment, and embracing your misfit-ness.
